Our Founder - My Story

May I take this opportunity to express my gratitude in advance, for allowing me to articulate why I am so motivated to help ambitious people living within India and Africa to convert their aspirations into a reality. Having been in a similar position to many of them myself, I believe that I am extremely well placed to do so. I must admit that I have found writing this correspondence more difficult than I anticipated, as I am not comfortable recording my achievements in this way. I much prefer letting my actions speak louder than my words and for others to share their experiences of how hopefully I have helped them fulfil their potential (be it personal or in business). However, I am delighted to make an exception in this instance, to demonstrate my determination and sincerity in assisting my beloved India and Africa to secure the future they justly deserve. I truly believe it is their “time” and successful leaders, like myself, have a duty and vocation to invest and develop a practical legacy that transforms real lives for this and future generations.

I was born in Uganda, my family having arrived in UK as refugees escaping the brutal regime of Idi Amin. I am probably best known as the founder and driving force behind Euro Car Parts http://corporate.eurocarparts.com/ which I founded over 30 years ago at the age of 18, after raising £5,000 to set up a motor parts shop in Willesden, North West London. Euro Car Parts expanded by 25% to 35% each year since and became the aftermarket-leading supplier of parts, paints and equipment for all makes of cars to garages and body-shops. Today it has 200 branches employing approximately 9,000 staff throughout the UK. ECP's annual turnover now exceeds £900m, over four times those of its nearest competitor. Through my “hands-on” leadership, we developed substantial e-commerce, body shop supply and export businesses. We are already half way to creating a similar-sized business in continental Europe. Along the way I was proud to have developed truly pioneering, methodologies within the fields of Logistics, Supply Chain, Global Sourcing, IT systems integration, Employee Motivation, Marketing and CRM which directly supercharged this remarkable growth.

In October 2011, I sold Euro Car Parts business to LKQ Corporation of Chicago, a NASDAQ-listed Fortune 500 company, for £280million. After the sale I agreed to become the Executive Chairman of all LKQ's UK businesses (including ECP) and more recently accepted an invitation to join their main USA board as an executive Director. In addition to these roles, five years ago, my children set up a separate property company to manage the family interests and their future ambitions. Now called the Dominvs Group http://dominvsgroup.com this has expanded greatly with an investment portfolio already exceeding £400million and has divisions specialising in hotels, residential property, commercial property, private equity and wealth management. It works across the spectrum of property disciplines: acquisition, development, disposal, leasing and facilities management – delivered from a London head-office by a gifted pool of property professionals.

Through my business, charitable and social activities, I have amassed a huge network of personal and business contacts. I am very active in motor industry campaigns and charities and have many friends in the manufacturing, aftermarket and dealer sectors. In the wider business world, I have numerous contacts: for example, I was on the judging panel for the PWC Private Business Awards 2014 and I am “former Asian Businessman of The Year”. I have of course, with my wife Rani, always been very active in the British Asian community, with lots of involvement in social and charity events. Unsurprisingly, I have always been a car enthusiast, my children and I are passionate about cars and have 3-4 interesting cars housed in our garage at the family home in Hampstead.

My heart and passion resides in India, my history connects me with Africa, my 35 years business accomplishments throughout Europe, Asia, Africa & the America’s places me in an incredibly privileged position to develop further my great love and established connections within India. Although I am immensely proud of all my achievements to date, both in my business and personal life, it is the next Chapter of my journey that excites me most at 57 years young, I have never felt fitter, hungrier or more motivated to succeed in bringing cultures, continents & communities together to improve their quality of life and realise their own unique vision. I look forward to exploring in more detail how we could potentially work together to achieve this.
